Wireless in the Rain?

Hi group,

OK - possibly a stupid question but I was wondering if, in heavy rain,
2.4GHz transmissions are impeded in any way at all.

Does this occur?

If not, are there any atmospheric conditions that affect
transmission/reception?

Cheers,

Richard.

Conventional long range 2Gig spatial diversity radio does suffer from rain
effects, however the published standard for 2.4Gig wiFi is 300m max if I
recall. That would be okay, except in typhoon rain, however if you are using
wifi to do long hops (a network of my colleague runs 2.4km) it may suffer.

Ask him after the winter !

Ha ha, okay.

Many thanks mate. Just got me thinking seeing as it's raining right now (no
doubt a sign of things to come!).

Cheers,

Richard.

Well, I've set two long range 2.4GHz links up (each around 1.8 miles), although
the received signal strengths were a bit on the low side (no rain), we've found
that the rain actually makes no odds at all - you'd think it would, but not in
our case, and have had a few fairly heavy bouts.

Now if you were operating at 60GHz, then the rain wud have drastic effects lol.

C.

Rainstorms usually include wind, and low-cost directional attennae
will be affected by wind.

I transmit one kilometer in the Pacific Northwest between two cantennas
connected to Wap 11s.

There is no noticeable performance degradation due to weather for me.

There should be little to no effect from the rain. I have a wireless "b"
going about 500meters with no problem from rain. The problem I do have are
with WIND and Trees.

Trees are not a problem in the Fall and winter but think of each leaf as a
small bag of water. When the leaves come out those trees are the same as a
lead wall.

As for Wind, the post we mounted the antenea on moves slightly in high
winds. The connects becomes very erratic then.

We eventually went to a trenched fiber line just this spring. :-)

TNX
Blair.

I have an 11 mile link between two DWL-900ap+ with 24dBi antennas. I have
yet to see any negative effects of rain, fog or snow. This is why C-Band
satellite networks have superior rain fade models than KU Band.

off the subject.....

Matt:

We are looking at either a Pacific Wireless PMANT15 parabolic or PAWVA24-16
yagi for a
link that is much shorter. Which polarity are you using with your long
link?
