Hello Chaps

i have a few questions on the below if any one can answer id appreciate it.

Scenario:
1 X ADSL line
1 X USB ADSL modem (with RJ45 connection on the back)
1 X Wireless DSL/Cable Gateway router i.e.(Belkin F5D7230uk4 )
1 X laptop with wireless built in
1 X Pc with wireless card

1 .Is it possible that the USB modem can be plugged into the DSL Gateway via
Ethernet only and the internet connection shared to the laptop and PC?

2. How will the modem dial out?

3. Where does the modem get its power from ?

4. Am I correct in saying that these gateway routers are designed for Cable
modems and DSL not ADSL?

5. Does anyone have this setup?

Hope I have explained it well
Any answers would be great..

Thanks

Yes the Belkin 7230 is designed more for cable modems but see below..

> 5. Does anyone have this setup?

You have brought/are looking at the wrong Belkin unit.

You need the Belkin F5D7630 (around £70 from Ebuyer.com) instead - it
contains a built in ADSL modem and can do exactly what you require.

The USB modem would no longer be required, as the 7630 includes that and it
can be attached directly to the BT socket etc and can then provide internet
access to the laptop/pc, either wirelessly or via a wired connection

Sunil

Thanks Sunil my suspicions were correct that the gateway devices are only
good for pppoe. I have been trying to drum this into one of the companies i
deal with who are adamant it will work. It's all about cost to them.

as well as the belkin can you recommend a similar dlink router with modem?

If you're not on somebody's shit list, you're not doing anything
worthwhile.

http://www.dlink.co.uk/pages/product...s_wireless.asp

DLink only seem to have DSL-604+ - though unlike the Belkin, it only
supports the older 802.11b standard

The D-Link DSL-604 is the main thing you are looking for, AFAIK, an 11g
compatible version has just been released.
I have a 604+, which supports 22mbps.
I seriously suggest you don't buy a D-Link tho. I also suggest you use
cables where possible.
Netgear (DG834G) seem reliable, and Linksys do the WAG54G. All are
available from www.ebuyer.co.uk at less than £100 delivered

Yes (done it myself). The router provides the 'sharing' and the modem
the connection type.

It will normally have a configuration option to allow you to set the
account and password details. This mat not always be the case with
some of the simpler USB only ADSL modems but the dual (USB / Ehernet)
ones mostly do?

Hmm. For the USB ones then often the USB host, but for the dual type
then the ones I have seen come with a 'wall wart' type PSU?

They are 'designed' to have a loacal LAN side and a WAN side. What
happens on the WAN side *can* be of no consequence to the router as
long as it provides the minimum services (like access to a DHCP
server).

I don't, but have worked on a couple the same.

The other replies you have had suggesting a combined ADSL modem /
switch / router / NAT / Firewall / WiFi interfaces are all good.

I have a Terayon cable modem > Dlink Di-704 router / 4 port 10/100
switch and a Netgear FS108 8 port 10/100 switch. This also connects to
a Netgear ME102 WiFi AP (I had it separate from the router for better
positioning).

I have 3 machines running Cat3 (I flood wired the house many years ago
<g>) and the odd laptop / test machine via WiFi.

All the best ..
