Hope this is not off topic, but here goes.

Upon investigating the market for wireless adaptor and pcmcia cards
and desktop pc card for linux, one person said that wireless -g
is not recommended for anything less than a T1 line.

What is the local wisdom on this issue here in this newsgroup?

I have a desktop running Mandrake 9.1 and a business DSL line + router
using DHCP and a laptop also with 9.1 on the LAN.

If I get the wireless, I'd of course like to maximize the speed of
data transfer if possible.

I understand that 'g' is still in development and I probably wouldn't
get it until it were out of develpment anyway.

Thoughts?

Thanks for any contributions.

Using g for the LAN is one thing, don't think you'll get 54Mbps from a
DSL. Don't know what your plans are, but one thought is to use your
cable connected box for fast DSL download. See what that speed is.
Might be supprised. I do regular downloads and the Linksys WPC11 (b)
works for me.

All versions of 802.11 are capable of much more throughput than commonly
available internet access. At 11 Mb/s even 802.11b is several times faster
than a DS1 at 1.544 Mb/s. So, if internet access is your main concern,
802.11b is fine. On the other hand, if you want to do lots of local server
access, perhaps one of the faster systems would be suitable.
