I would get your own wireless router/ADSL modem and then go for wires only
broadband. I've just purchased a netgear DG824M. It takes the ADSL line
from the BT box and sits underneath an armchair in my living room, and I
use a wifi card in my desktop and my laptop anywhere in the house.
Cost me £130ish from
www.dabs.com, and I've gone with PlusNet at £21.99 a month.

Bog-standard ADSL goes at 500k ish. WLAN goes at 11Megabits/second. The
ADSL is the bottleneck.
