Wireless problems

Hi,

I am trying to connect a Win98 notebook wirelessly to my Win XP PC to
share broadband and files etc.

Installed 2 Belkin Wireless network cards. That seems to be OK. Both PCs
are displaying green icons and displaying the same network name. Signal
strength is OK.

The problem is when I run the Network set up wizard. Runs ok on my XP
machine, but when I run netseup from the floppy on my notebook it
requires a reboot. I then get a message to say that it cannot complete
the wizard because it cannot find my network hardware.

As a consequence I cannot seem to see any files on each of the PCs.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Steve

XP's Network Setup Wizard sometimes fails to find a network adapter
that's installed and working, probably because of a minor bug in the
adapter's driver program. You might be able to fix the problem by
downloading and installing the latest driver program.

However, there's no need to run the Wizard. You can make the same
settings manually that it would make. Here's what it would do on
Win98:

1. Set the computer name, computer description, and workgroup name
that you specify.
2. Install these network components if they're not already present:
a. Client for Microsoft Networks
b. TCP/IP
c. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
3. Share any printers connected to the computer.
4. Create the "Shared Documents" folder if it doesn't exist.
5. Share the "Shared Documents" folder.
6. Configure the local area network connection to obtain an IP
address automatically.

Thanks Steve,

I've tried to fllow your instructions.

I cannot see how I go about step 6 to configure IP addresses. I tried to
ping the PCs without joy.

Using ipconfig my 'internet connected 'PC has an IP of 192.168.0.1 and
an IP address PPP for my internet connection as 195.166.151.14.

Any more ideas?

Thanks

Steve

You're welcome, Steve. The IP addresses that you list for the
'internet connected' PC are fine for an XP computer that's sharing its
Internet connection over the network.

Do steps 1-6 on the Win 98 notebook, not on XP. For step 6, go to
Control Panel | Network, click "TCP/IP->wireless network adapter", and
click Properties.

Hi Steve, tried to do that but still no joy.

Up to date drivers on both machines. Network set up now works on neither.
Netbios enabled
File sharing set up
Internet connection set up
IP address automatic
Client for Microsoft Networks on both
TCP/IP on both
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks on both

I did manageto connect to Internet but must have fiddled and have now
lost that.

So still can't share files or internet.
