Wireless Printer setup

I've been asked to have a look at this fella's new Olivetti ANY_WAY wireless
printer, as he can't get it connected wirelessly. As I've no experience
with wireless printers I'd appreciate any advice on setting these up so that
I'm not going in (too!) blind.

I did ask him if he had WEP/WPA or MAC filtering enabled which may interfere
and his eyes just glazed over, so I suspect I'm on my own when I get there!!

TIA

I've no direct experience with this printer, but I'd imagine you'll have
to hook up via the USB port first and use the wired setup to select
channel, IP group and suchlike.

I'd recommend disabling any firewalls initially, as they can often cause
problems.

Print-out a settings page on the printer. On that it should say what
the ip address is and whether it's using static or DHCP.

The printer will need to be on the same subnet as the wireless router
and the rest of the PC's onn the network.

Your friend should assign a static ip address to the printer using the
same subnet as the rest of the network for example 192.168.N.N /
255.255.255.0 or 10.0.0.N /255.0.0.0 or, if he/she wants to use DHCP,
get the router to assign a permanent ip address to the printer's MAC
address.

Ping the printer's ip address from one of the machines on the network,
you should get a return if the settings are correct.

In addition to all the other good advice, check it's easy to find the
Olivetti support website before you go. You might want to download
updated drivers, the manual and so on.

it has some sort of "search for networks" tool on the menu and is
fairly intuitive. Start with no wireless security (WEP / WPA) as the
user interface is a bit primitive.

The one I played with DHCP'd itself off the router and I could see its
IP and access it with a web browser. YMMV.

Already had a look at the website and downloaded a manual - strangely, it
doesn't even mention wireless inside apart from the front cover!!

A note about networked printers - dynamic IPs sometimes don't work well,
so it's a good idea to set the printer to a static IP before you set it
up on any PCs.

Agree, however most routers will allow you to allocate a specific ip to
the MAC address of the nic in the printer.
