Wireless PCMCIA Card

Win98 will not recognize LinkSys WPC11 wireless network
card. The both the power light and the link light light
up on the card, but Win98 does not recognize the card.
Even manually running the new hardware wizard and pointing
to the driver does not work. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Generally you need to install PCMCIA card drivers before installing the
device. Remove the card, boot into Safe Mode, remove the device from Device
Manager, then reboot normally and install the drivers before installing the
card.

Install the Wireless Lan Utility. I did that and the two
computers were able to talk.

I am having the same problem but I made a little progress on it--I think. I
downloaded
the latest version of the driver from Linksys and discovered that if I
direct the wizard
to the WPC11 folder it doesn't work but if I send it to the "Autorun" folder
(within the WPC11
folder) the wizard starts to load the driver. My problem is that my win98
disc apparently
does not contain the file "dhcpcsvc.dll" that is required for the
installation. I had a brief look
on the Microsoft Update site but didn't find anything helpful Can anyone
suggest a way to
find this required component? MK

See if you have the Windows setup files (search for a folder containing
several dozen files that begin with WIN98 and end with the letters CAB) on
your hard drive, if you do you can tell the driver installer to look there
for the files it needs.

Thanks for the suggestion. It seems to have worked and I
was able to finish the installation of the drivers. I tried to
connect to a network today but never succeeded. I remain
hopeful that I'll be able to get this to work soon. MK

I'm glad we're making some progress. Now what happened when you tried to
connect to a network? What were you expecting to happen, what did happen,
and most importantly if there were error messages what were they exactly?

I thought there was a chance I had all the necessary components so I went to
IE 5 and tried to connect. I don't recall the exact response but I think it
simply
said the page wasn't available. I am now concerned that I don't have a
required
protocol (?) designated IPX. I think I need to extract this but I don't know
the
exact file name. I searched the *.inf files in WIN98 and didn't see any sign
of it.
(NetBEUI does seem to be available.) I'm working on this from a position of
zero understanding of networking--this is the first time I've tried to join
a network
of any form--so my progress is slow. Any help is greatly appreciated. MK

You went to Internet Explorer and tried to connect to what? Another PC?
The Internet?

You don't need any protocol except TCP/IP installed for basic networking.

Sorry I was so vague. I tried to connect to a network provided at
my local public library where an Internet connection is available. One
problem I've noticed is that when I try to unselect the dialup connection
and instead set the wireless connection for networking it doesn't seem
to 'take'. I hope to try to connect again tomorrow. I have made a few
changes but I'll be surprised if they are enough to enable the connection.
Thanks again for your continued help. MK
