Wireless newbie / pro software devloper needs advice

Hi,

I am a software developer, but know little about wireless hardware
technology.

I have a concept for a software / hardware bundle that would require a
number of USB peripheral devices to communicate wirelessly and concurrently
with a single computer within a short range.

I am looking for (a) The protocol to use and (b) a supplier of generic
communication hardware devices and PCI cards that enable this protocol along
with the supporting API.

Bandwidth requirements will be fairly high (and almost entirely one way:
from the device to the computer).

Range will be short (< 50 meters).

Price is important (I cant afford to contract for custom hardware
production).
