I recently purchased a Linksys WRT54G wireless router and WPC54G wireless
notebook adapter to expand my cable modem hook-up from my desktop to my
notebook. Unfortunately, I've had very little success in getting this
system up and running. I've spent countless hours on the phone with Linksys
technical service and they've tried everything they can to no avail. So now
I turn to you, the experts, to lend me a hand or point me in the right
direction.

First of all, here's my setup. I'm running Windows XP on both computers,
have high speed cable internet access through Cox, am using a Motorola
Surfboard SB1300 cable modem in addition to the above mentioned wireless
hardware.

My initial problems started with attempting to run the set-up disk that came
with the Linksys router. After searching for my internet connection, it
told me I didn't have one when I obviously do have one. I then attempted to
set up the router manually using the information provided in the user's
manual. Once through this process, I do not have internet connection when
hooked up through the router, but do have it when hooked up straight from
the modem to the computer. I then called Linksys and they walked me through
several IP configurations all to no avail. They even suggested that I may
have a bad router, so I returned it to get another and still have the same
problems.

I began to think that maybe the problem lie in the firewall setup. So I
disabled it and attempted to setup the router with both the setup disk and
manually - still nothing.

I'm at my wits end.

Do any of you have any suggestions? (Remember that I'm a neophyte and need
to have everything explained to me as if I'm six years old!!) Is there a
website that can guide me through the process?

I'm thinking that the problem probably lies with my internet provider. Can
and does Cox block attempts to set up wireless routers? If so, is there
anyway around it?

That's all I can think of now. I'd appreciate any information and guidance
that you can offer. If you'd like to respond to me via email, please use
the following address chuck_tracy@yahoo

Thanks in advance

Chuck

Did you clone the MAC address of the NIC in the PC that originally connected
to the cable modem (into the router)?

What IP addresses are you using - DHCP or fixed?
Can you ping the router?
Can you ping the cable modem?
Can you see the cable modem's status page (usually http://192.168.100.1/ or
similar)?
Have you set the gateway to the router's IP address?

That's about all I can think of for now.....
