Hello.

I'm still very new to the wireless world and here is my dillema.

Downstairs computer: Windows 2000, SBC/Yahoo DSL software and
service. Phone line from jack to DSL modem. Ethernet cable from
modem to ethernet card in computer.

Upstairs computer: Windows XP, regular 56k modem. I did purchase a
wireless USB adapter since all PCI spaces are full.

Laptop: With wireless adapter

I purchased a D-Link router (DI-514) thinking it would work. The back
of the router had the power source spot, a "WAN" connection, and four
ports. I followed the instructions so that it went:

DSL phone line---> DSL modem
ethernet cable from DSL modem's other plug---->Router WAN plug
ethernet cable from port 1 ----> ethernet card in computer

For whatever reason, this didn't work. When I tried to log-in, it
would not. I'm guessing I bought the wrong part or I'm doing
something wrong. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Nathan;
It sounds like you have all your connections right. When you say you try to
log-in are you talking about to the router or to your ISP.
Dlink has some procedures if you are using PPPoe to make your connection
(most DSL connections do this). Check out;

When I had SBC DSL service (pre-Yahoo) they used PPPoE. To connect one
computer, I had to have their Enternet software installed, which caused all
sorts of computer problems.

Later, when I installed a Linksys router, I had to set it up to do the PPPoE
negotiation and I was able to remove the POS Enternet software from my PC.

Have you set up your router to do PPPoE? You can't run PPPoE through your
router.

I think that is where the problem might be: the log-in. It says
something along the lines of "Connection timed-out". That message
comes up when I try to log-in with the SBCYahoo software. I tried to
configure the router the first time by typing in the address into the
web-browser. It asked to create a network name, password, my DSL user
name and password. It then got stuck on the screen "Saving" for over
five minutes.

So how do I log-in?...with the regular SBC software or...the router?

Without running the SBC Yahoo software, try following these instructions,
straight from the Linksys Knowledgebase:

http://makeashorterlink.com/?P22732326

If it works, dump the software.
