Wireless Networking/Router Issues

Hi,

I am having an issue with my laptop (running Windows XP Professional)
using an Orinoco Wireless PC Card and connection to my Linksys
Wireless Access Point Router to both browse my home network, and use
my shared broadband DSL connection. I have the following setup:

1) Desktop computer wired directly to the router - connects to the
internet fine via DSL modem connected to the router, and sees Desktop
in (2) below through "My Network Places".

2) A separate Windows XP desktop with a wireless network adapter -
utilizes the internet connection fine and sees Desktop in (1) above
through "My Network Places" without an issue.

The problem is with machine #3 - a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop running
Windows XP Professional using an Orinoco Silver Wireless Newtork Card.
I actually get a connection to the wireless network, with excellent
signal strength. However, I cannot see any other computers on the
network, nor get the internet connection. I also get "destination
host unreachable" if I try to ping the router or any of the other
computers. Originally, I ran into what seems to be a standard problem
with PPPoE connections...the ip address was auto-configuring to
169.*.*.*, instead of the 192.168.1.* for my internal network. I have
gone in and manually set the ip address (192.168.1.something), subnet
mask (255.255.255.0), and gateway (to my router-192.168.1.1), but I
still cannot see the other computers on the network, nor does the
internet connection flow to this computer. I tried setting up a
manual connection through XP for PPPoE, but it won't connect through
that either.

Any other suggestions as to what I could try? My DSL provider (if it
matters at all) is Earthlink via Sprint. Like I said, I have two
machines (one wired and one wireless) that have no issues. It's just
this laptop that is giving me trouble. I have updated the Orinoco's
driver to a new version but this had no effect.

Any ideas/suggestions on what to try next?

Thanks much,
Gema

That right there tells me that the TCP/IP stack is hosed and that the
machine cannot get a DHCP IP nor use a static IP from the router, until
you rebuild the TCP/IP Stack on the machine. It may have the words Auto
Config too.

regedit hkey\local machine\system\currentcontrolset\services

delete winsock and winsock2

NIC Property Box --- delete everything

Reboot the machine which will rebuild the TCP/IP Stack.

put everything back in the NIC Property Box

You should be fine after that.

Duane

I am on Win 2K right now. You can ask me in a couple of weeks and maybe,
I could tell you, when I get XP.

The correct answer to the original problem was that the Orinoco
wireless card I was using was only good for up to 64-bit WEP
encryption, and I set my network up with 128-bit WEP encryption.
Sometimes the most difficult problems are solved in the simplest ways,
eh?
