I've set up a wireless home network between my ME running
desktop (the host) and my XP running laptop. I can see
my workgroup MSHOME from my laptop but not vice versa.
When I click on MY NETWORK PLACES then ENTIRE NETWORK
from my desktop, I get a blank window. In a nutshell, I
can see, I can ping from my laptop to my desktop, but I
can not access the printer that's been configured to be
shared.

HELP!!!

I'll say up front, I can't help,but I have the same
situation between a desktop with ME and notebook with
XP. I installed a Linksys router and notebook adapter
card, and for internet access it's working fine. Last
weekend I tried to set up the home network to share files
and a printer, but I can only access the shared docs file
from each computer. File transfers work okay but I can't
make the printer work. Any suggestions?

Also, after setting up the network on each of the 2
computers (following the Linksys instructions), I made an
installation disk from the desktop (ME) and from the
notebook (XP). The ME disk won't play on the notebook
and the XP disk played on the desktop, but did not
successfully install the network. What's worse, the
desktop is now having problems booting. Do you know a
way to uninstall the files installed on the desktop ME
computer from the notebook XP computer?

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...c_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/..._protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...hoot/netbt.htm

4. Run "ipconfig /all" on XP and look at the "Node Type" at the
beginning of the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer" (which should
actually be "Point-to-Point") that's the problem. It means that the
computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on a
peer-to-peer network for NetBIOS name resolution.

If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parame ters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".
