Wireless Networking Intermittent Depending on CPU usage

Hi there, my issue is quite simple, when i run an mp3 or
video file (anything compressed) my wireless internet cuts
out. I know this is caused by a slow system with not much
ram, and the cpu usage being too high that it cant
maintain connection.

Is there a way to get aroudn this issue, its been
happening for many months now and wired networking didn't
have this issue. Is there a way to give real-time
priority to the pci bus, wireless card or something that
can prevent this, this way the program wont steal the
resources needed to hold the connection.

Specs: Pentium MMX 166, 50 megs SDram PC100, Windows 98 SE.

(i know wireless minimum requirements are 200 mhz so
please dont state the obvious)

THank you for your time,
Robert M. Rosa

Unfortunately, "the obvious" is the only solution. You're well below
minimums for either the network card or for multimedia playback. Just as
you wouldn't expect a Volkswagen Beetle to do well in a Formula One race,
you can't expect 2003-era performance from a 1995-era PC.

Do a ctrl/alt/del to get the task manager and check to see what else is
running. You'll have to do some research to know exactly what you need.
Eliminate all the excess processes. Most likely some little nasty has been
installed as a bi-product of something downloaded from the internet and it's
chewing up CPU cycles.

I have an old IBM laptop with 128Mb Ram (not sure the speed) and it handles
wireless fine.

I periodically check my msconfig, even check the physical
registry for hidden start up items, so the system is most
likely virus free, i just need to find a way to give
multimedia play back a low priority, winamp only lets me
go normal as the lowest, or give the pci bus real time
access to the cpu and ram, DOn't know if i can configure
the DMA for the bus or the card though, im so used to the
windows xp setup for tweaking systems. Im not sure if 98
has the same features just not in a graphical interface.

I do know this computer runs wired net with multimedia
fine, its just that the wireless needs a lil more juice
then the computer alots it when other things are running

Ussually i have mIRC running, i end task the wireless
monitor once it confirms the wirelesxs xconnection, other
then that, its just the volume control service.

Is there other programs that let you have more control
over their interaction with the system resources, winamp
has the buffer and direct sound options, but it still
disconnects even when running at quarter quality. Media
player guives me next to tnothing for control so it makes
my connection drop fast.

I'm also getting a soundblaster live sent here form my
other house to see if that will ease the sound
decompression from the processor
