Hello,

I have a Speedtouch 570 wireless router with a WinXP laptop and Win2k PC.
Both laptop and pc were W-networked, with encryption enabled, and I was able
to ping the router from both laptop and pc.
I have now moved the PC to a different part of my house where the radio
signal is weak.
To resolve this, I have bought a Belkin 54g wireless access point which is
connected to the Speedtouch 570 router vis a CAT5 cable.
Now I can network the PC and laptop using the Belkin access point, BUT...

1. I cannot ping the Belkin access point from either the PC or the laptop
2. If I enable encryption on the Belkin access point, I cannot connect to
the internet.
3. I can ping the PC from the laptop, but not the other way around.
4. How should I setup the Belkin access point as a wireless access point
with the router instead of physically connecting with the CAT5 cable.

Both PC and laptop get their IP address assigned by the Speedtouch router
(DHCP).
The Belkin access point has a different IP address than the range supported
by the Speedtouch router, but is on the same subnet.

Regards,
Diwakar Cirium

Are the machines getting a valid IP and it's not 169. which indicates
that the machine cannot get a vaild IP from the DHCP server on the
router?

Hi Duane
Thanks for responding.

I am using WinXP Home Edition.
I have tried disabling ICF, but no effect.
Also, encryption is off.
Output of ipconfig is:

The Belkin is 192.168.2.254 subnet: 255.255.255.0

I have MAC filtering on on both SpeedTouch and Belkin, and broadcast off.

That's my wireless card set-up using a Linksys 11S4 wireless AP router.

I think that you have some kind of mis-configuration happening. I have
never used an standalone WAP. But I think it's not connected to the
router correctly, which I think the router should be the gateway device
and is 192.168.1.1 on my network. Your router has a device IP too. I
don't know if a WAP can be a gateway device that has a DHCP server, like
the router.

You'll also notice that the DNS Servers IP(s) point to the ISP's server,
with the NIC getting an DHCP IP being assigned by the router, which you
should be able to view this info from one of the router's admin screens.

Does the WAP indicate that it can be a DHCP server, which I don't think
there can be two DHCP servers on the network, not without some possible
problems?

Also, can the WAP get a DHCP or can it be configured to use one of the
router's static IP(s)?

Duane

Problem solved!

I moved the router to a different location in the house, and withdrew the
access point from the network.
Now I had just the PC and laptop connected in a wireless network to the
SpeedTouch router.
I disabled ICF from the laptop.

I tried now by pinging the machines.
The PC could ping the router and itself, but not the laptop.
The laptop could ping the PC and the router but not itself.
Hmm. I checked all services between the PC and laptop trying to spot the
difference, and noticed that I had Norton Internet Security running on the
laptop.
I checked the norton settings and found that I had the personal firewall
enabled.
I disabled the personal firewall, and bingo! I could ping the laptop from
itself.

I could now see both the machines on the network.
I enabled the ICF on the laptop and it still allowed network access.

I have now enabled WEP and have the XP ICF on, and the network is working
fine.

Thanks Duane for your help.

Regards,
Diwakar Cirium

Things can be tricky at first, but it seems that you are on your way!

You can have what's called a double FW situation where running two FW(s)
can stop packets from reaching a machine.

I use IPsec behind BlackIce and the router, which presents no problems on
the XP machines.

You may want to use IPsec to supplement XP's ICF which stops inbound or
outbound to and from the machine by port, protocol, etc. All you have to do
is apply the AnalogX zip file.
