Hi, Im new to the wireless networking thing and have a simple question - in
a conventional, wired network, it was possible to connect two machines with
a crossover cable ... could I connect a laptop to a computer wirelessly
using 54Mbps without using a wireless access point? Or are these always
needed?

Thanks,
Chris Murray

It took me a while to find the answer some time back. The answered is that
it does work.
I have a desktop and a laptop connected wirelessly using Belkin 54G. Both
use XP Pro. Transmission rate falls off if I put 10 metres and an 11 inch
wall between them.

It ought to be possible using "Ad hoc" mode. I have not tried it myself,
but there are various descriptions of what to do that will turn up if
you Google for '"ad hoc" 802.11'.

ok, thanks to both of you.

I have heard of the term 'ad hoc' for wireless networks but for some reason
the phrase "peer to peer" was stuck in my head. It seems pretty easy to set
up so I will give it a go.
