Today I decided to give it a try: a wireless network card in a desktop
running Ubuntu Breezy. The Linksys card with a Broadcom Corporation
BCM4306 chipset combined with ndiswrapper install easy with the native
Windows drivers. Only the performance of the card was not very good.
Using ftp to copy a 845 MB file around, the speed on the wireless
network is between 2 MB/s and 2.8 MB/s and some two values for the card
are increasing all the time: Tx excessive retries and Invalid misc
Is there a way to keep these values as low as possible and how could I
do this?

Regards,

Isn't that normal for a G card? If it was 2 Mb/s then I would be worried.

If you really want to tweak it, make sure you've got a new copy of ndiswrapper and the latest broadcom drivers for your chipset.

Thanks for your answer.

I had hoped that I could comfortably run an X-server over the wireless
connection, but the network speed seems not fast enough to let it run
smoothly. On my wired 100 Mb/s LAN the X-server runs well, but the ftp
speed on that network is a factor 4 higher than on the wireless one.

Maybe you know some settings to tune an X-server environment?
