yes - if you have more than 2 Ethernet devices that have to be connected
within the same subnet.
if all you want is 2 devices, then a direct cable between them is fine -
ethernet doesnt care.
in practice most wired home nets seem to have a switch or a hub - as soon as
you have 2 devices you seem to accumulate more.
It also makes sense to have a spare port or 2 if you need high performance
now and then on your wireless laptop - e.g. to copy a large file to a CD
burner, or for disk backup.

Should work - unless you have other devices you need on the ethernet - print
server? router or firewall for internet access?

You can get a router with an embedded 4 or 8 port ethernet switch - keeps
the number of devices down so long as it is OK to have the switch and the
router at the same place.
