Thanks for all of the help I`ve been given in the last month - I`m learning
quickly now !

Access Points:

Would I be correct in thinking that an Wireless Access Point would NORMALLY
be
connected to a Router/Switch rather than directly to a server ?

My Access Point is currenty plugged directly into the network socket of my
server at present
hoping to be able to see and share files with two other computers in the
house wirelessly.

I`m SURE my setup is wrong and I need to add a router/switch connected to my
Server - presumably I can then connect the Access Point to the Router/Switch
?

Can someone more knowledgeable than me confirm/deny this ?

Correct, it needs to be plugged into a hub or a switch.

yes - if you have more than 2 Ethernet devices that have to be connected
within the same subnet.

if all you want is 2 devices, then a direct cable between them is fine -
ethernet doesnt care.

in practice most wired home nets seem to have a switch or a hub - as soon as
you have 2 devices you seem to accumulate more.

It also makes sense to have a spare port or 2 if you need high performance
now and then on your wireless laptop - e.g. to copy a large file to a CD
burner, or for disk backup.

Should work - unless you have other devices you need on the ethernet - print
server? router or firewall for internet access?

You can get a router with an embedded 4 or 8 port ethernet switch - keeps
the number of devices down so long as it is OK to have the switch and the
router at the same place.
