A wireless network too far?

My current setup:
1 Belkin modem router connected only to my Broadband phone line (no hardwire
connection to any computer)
2x desktop PCs each with USB external wireless network adapters (not access
points)
2x laptop PCs, one with built-in WiFi, the other with a network adapter card
in PCMCIA slot
All machines running Windows XP Home except for one of the laptops which has
XP Pro.

Current situation:
All machines are able to access The Internet via the modem router with
absolutely no problem.

My goal:
To enable file sharing between all four machines, wirelessly. A situation I
enjoyed some time ago before I installed the wireless modem router when only
one desktop PC had a Broadband Internet connection via a hadrwired modem.

My problem:
I seem to be unable to set up another wireless network (assuming my modem
router to be a separate netork on its own) where each computer can 'see'
each other's network cards and so share files.

My questions:
1. Am I asking too much of my system to do this?
2. Can I set up a wireless file sharing network without disrupting my
excellent wireless Broadband network?
3. Can I set up a network just using network adapter cards (it seemed to
work previously - but I have upgraded my adapters since then).
4. Am I simply trying to set up a network too far?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Rick

A WIRELESS NETWORK too far no just doesn't have the right ring to it
A ROUTER too far no
A SWITCH too far no
A HUB too far no
A BRIDGE too far Yes, that sounds right!
Was a good film too.

Sorry about my slightly frivolous reply earlier Rick. At first I thought you
had two networks that require bridging but now having actually read your
post, I cant see where the second network comes in to it.
What IP addresses and subnet masks are assigned to your machines? Are the IP
's fixed or is DHPC in use?

Graham.

No problem, Graham - I feel very close to that film right now, as in I'm
losing the battle!

I'm a bit of a newbie where networking is concerned so you need to clarify
what info you need and where I find it. Just did a quick check of the modem
router connection on my main desktop PC and couldn't find any set IP
addresses though I did find a box saying 'DCHP enabled' under TCP/IP
properties. Any help?

Rick

can you clarify what do you mean - do you want to set up two wifi
networks one for the broadband connection and one for the internal
home network - if this is the case then I doubt you can do this with
the current access point you have. The AP will only allow you on
network on the wireless and this would be for the internal home
network.

I have implemented multiple wireless networks using VLANs - but these
are all on 600 pounds each wireless access points with RADIUS servers
using PEAP for authentication.

I'm not necessarily trying to set up two networks. I assumed that the modem
router, because it is only connected to my broadband line can only do the
one job of distributing The Internet to all my PCs. Whereas, with file
sharing - which only involves PC talking to PC - I'd have to set up another
network to allow each PC to 'see' the others' wireless network adapters. If
my assumption is wrong I'd be more than happy to stand corrected and would
be grateful for any advice on how to do it properly.

I know my modem router has LAN sockets which could be hadrwired to my PCs
but the whole point of this excercise it to create a wireless network (or
two!) that would distibute Internet and file sharing around my house.

If any of that sounds gibberish, forgive me - I'm very much a newbie at
this!

as long as your access point is on the same subnet as the other PC's -
then the wifi clients can access each other - again assuming a DHCP
server in on your network..

please email me directly as I may be able to go into more detail..

Thank you for your kind offer. Tried to e-mail you but without success
(bounced back). Can you suggest another way of getting in touch with you?

Many thanks,

Rick
