Wireless Network at home, speed issue's

I have had a adsl 512k broadband connection for 5 months. Last week i
built a brand new computer for downstairs and set it up wirelessly so
that others can access the internet when they want. Last night when
someone was downloading something for about two minutes it seemed to
slow down my connection down quite considerably and i had to wait
several seconds before the bbc.co.uk site loaded up, general browsing
at the same time is fine and there is no noticeable slow down only
when someone is downloading something solidly on the other computer.

What i want to know is this normal with just one more computer sharing
the connection.

Also if i had a connection speed faster than 512k would i still notice
that slowdown or would my speed be impeded in the same way. If will be
slowed down like that i wil have to log into the router and disable
the wireless side of things so that i can get the speed that i have
become used to and someone else in the household will have to purchase
their own connection as my telephone line is separate from the other
line.

Thanks in advance.

du.

I presume you are logging on with one computer and using ICS to connect the
others?

Anyway, yes , you will notice a slow down on the other computers when
downloading sometimes. I would suggest using a download manager (i can
reccomend GetRight although it's not free) which allows you to set the
maximum speed for a download, so for instance, instead of your download
hogging 50kb/s you could set the max speed to 10kb/s and although the
download would be slower you would obviously benefit on the other PCs.

Also, if you were to say get a 1mb or 2mb broadband connection you would be
able to set the speed at a higher level as there is more bandwidth to share.
I certainly noticed a difference operating 2 PCs on 2mb instead of 512.

Remember though, the upload bandwidth will only be 256k even with a higher
connection speed.

Regards

I recomend netlimiter http://www.netlimiter.com

It's free for the trial period, and if you're going to use it permanently i
recommend buying it (or using a keygen off google ;-)

You set each computer's download speed limits which applies to anything done
on the computer regarding the internet...very useful!

You'd have to rely on folk not fiddling with it, but in xp you can set it to
hide in the system tray after, say 5 seconds; so no fiddling should occur!
