wireless network does not connect to unsecure connection

I see all the secure and unsecure connections in the list of available
networks. When I try to connect to a secure network, it asks me for a network
key (which I don't have). If i try to connect to an unsecure network, it pops
up a box saying "Please wait while windows connects to the 'neo1' network.
Waiting for the network..." this stays for a couple of minutes and
disappears. I don't know how to solve this problem. I have tried everything
possible that i could think of. Firewall disabling, setting up wireless
network again, lots of other things.

can someone please help me on this?

I forgot to mention what OS I am using.

Windows XP SP2. The wireless card is Wireless La 21003B Mini PCI adapter.
The router is 3Com
