Wireless network "booster" or "relay"

Someone tell me if such a beast exists... is there a device that will
"catch" an 802.11(b) signal and "boost" it so that the range is
extended?

In some sections of my house, I cannot get a clear connection, but
would be willing to place a booster in that part of the house if it
would allow a clear signal to that area.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hint: www.google.com

You're after a repeater e.g. dlink dwl900+ BUT it will repeat some
access points, can't say exactly all of them. You didn't provide info
on the existing AP you have.

I'm really not a fan of this thing at all, never had one, never will.

I think the problem is that it's too much of an unknown for people. The
amplification isn't much for starters and since it sits at the same
location as the original AP, it's pure hope that it'll reach the desired
dead spot. It's just a brute force and hope method.

On the other hand, locating either a second AP or a repeater in a known
signal coverage area, will definately cover completely new area in a
more predicatable way.

Oh, same cost too!

David.

David,
I've started another thread on the subject of dwl900AP+ and Netgear
router. I can almost get them to work. Maybe you have advice?

I realize that D-Link does not support the Netgear, so it's a gamble.
But it seems that it SHOULD work.

<snip>
Here's a snip from the other thread:
I am trying to use a D-Link DWL-900AP+ as a repeater, with no success.
I am not sure how to configure it.

System:
Netgear MR314 wireless router.
3 Laptops: Win98, NT4, XP, all with Netgear MA401 cards.

When I configure the 900AP+ as repeater, the laptops get a strong
signal, but I cannot connect to the network or the Internet. It seems
the repeater is getting signal, but no data.

I have the SSID set to the same value on all components. I have WEP
disabled everywhere.
</snip>

I've seen it Steve.

As I said, the unit transmits a signal regardless of what it gets
inbound.

Others have said try it in client mode first which is the simplest thing
you can do. If you can get it working as a client, chances are that you
could probably flick it to repeater and it will work.

Steve:
I use a 900AP+ as client against an old SMC 2655 (ver 1? same
internals as the WAP 1.1) The fw 2.3 works fine in client mode, but
the repeater mode is almost not working. But with 2.5 repeater mode
works fine, but now client mode works nor at all. So maybe you should
play around with different fw versins.
