Wireless Network (Belkin): Nothing in DHCP List

I've recently ventured to a wireless network at home, primarily to
share the brodband cable modem access. I have a Belkin 54g Wireless
Cable / DSL router, and into this is hardwired one p.c.. The other
p.c. uses a Belkin PCI 54g wireless card.

The internet access works fine from both p.c.s.. I ventured to try and
set up a local network to allow file sharing between the two p.c.s,
thus far without success. One thing I notice is that when I access the
Router setup screen, access the LAN tab and view the DHCP client list
there are no clients listed, even when both p.c.s are happily
accessing the internet. I presume I should be able to see the clients
?

Thanks

Paul

Are the pc's configured as DHCP-clients?

As long as the clients know the correct address for the router Internet
access will work, with or without DHCP. Check whether you left
everything on automatic or hardwired the clients IP and gateway.

By default DHCP should be enabled but don't worry too much about the
list, my Belkin router consistently misreports its client list. The
network seems to work anyway.

Internet access will work with a broken network as will other raw IP
services (VNC works happily here even when Windoze collapses the network
for example). Your network problems probably have nothing to do with the
router.

Same here. I have the Belkin 54G router (latest firmware) and a Belkin
54G pc card. My win xp pro desktop is wired and my win98se laptop is
wireless. I also have an HP 7130 multifunction printer networked via
wire and the HP print server.

I have never gotten a correct report out from the DHCP client list, with
or without DHCP enabled. Even Belkin tech support indicates that this is
a known issue but causes no problems. However, I have been successful in
setting up file sharing.

Some things to check:

1. Win xp firewall disabled. Same with software firewalls(i.e,
zonealarm) or set to appropriate values
2. TCP/IP environment correct (i.e, consistent with DHCP on or off)
3. Same workgroup
4. same encryption key
5. File sharing enabled on the appropriate machines

I'm sure I've missed stuff, but maybe this will help.

Harvey

You cannot use WinXP's Internet Connection firewall *and* a local
network (or perhaps just filesharing - can't remember). Disable it, its
a liability in any case since it does such a poor job.

My Zonealarm install failed to automatically add the local network to
its trusted zone. Check the Firewall/Zones page, manually add a Subnet
entry if your network is missing.
