Wireless network - advice please.

I propose replacing an existing DG824 wireless ADSL router with a plain
router - DG834 - and an access point - probably a WG602.

The reason for this is that I do not want my network to go down whenever
I have to reset the ADSL router.

I have the following queries.

1. Can an external antenna be fitted to the WG602?

2. I need to connect an existing printer which has a network card to
the wireless network. Can I use the old DG825 and connect it to the
printer? Will that work? If not, is there an inexpensive wireless print
server? The PS111W does not seem to be available.

3. What is a wireless bridge and how does it differ from an access
point?

Many thanks.

You won't have to if you buy a Draytek Vigor 2600We. Mine hasn't missed a
bit since May install.
Netgear WG602 (and DM602) are just too much trouble, I returned them.

Draytek can take external antenna, not sure about Netgear.
The latest Draytek 2600G has a printer port, but it's overdue from promised
Oct. availability.
Wifi bridge is point to point / one to one connection between networks.
AP can connect many wifi clients.
Regards,
Martin

Would that then work to support a printer with a network card?

I've got a WG602, works OK but I get remote stations giving it a
different MAC address for some reason.

The station list connection status on occasions switches between
Associated and Authenticated, I believe it should either be one or the
other and not switch before my very eyes.

I've had to return TWO Netgear WG511 network cards due to both
continually giving different MAC addresses each time computer boots
up, my Linksys and Orinoco cards are OK, just the Netgear playing up.

>1. Can an external antenna be fitted to the WG602?

According to Netgear's page it is not suitable for the WG602 but what
I think is that it is not supported. It is a screw in aerial with what
I think is a conventional Reverse SMA plug

I was totally confused with this also but it appears a bridge is a
WiFi adapter with an ethernet connection (others are either PCI,
laptop card or USB), it can connect directly to a computer or
switch/hub so has a 'crossover' facility.

It is therefore more adaptable than a straighforward WiFi adapter and
normally has better range.

If you had more than two computers I think you would need an Access
Point to network but if you had just two each could have some form of
adapter or bridge.

It took some time for me to get my head around this but if you want a
good explanation go to www.google.com then switch to the GROUPS tab.

Under advanced copy this into the message ID field
(E-Mail Removed)

That will bring up the thread which answers the Bridge AP difference.

No. You would need a print server.
But since your computers will are networked they can share a printer
attached to one of them.
Alternatively the new Draytek Vigor 2600G (54Mbs) has a printer server and
port built in,
it should be available any day now.

Martin

I was hoping you would say yes

If the printer already has a network card and thus has an IP address,
then would a bridge work? I can see no reason why not but would like
confirmation.

The printer is nowhere near the PC.

Same problem. Telephone point, PCs and printer are all separate - that
is why we need wireless for each one.

i believe ebuyer.com has wireless print servers. Not cheap though, eg
quickfind 49708 at £99.13. Better to run a long cable ;-) Or if you have
an ethernet ready printer, an access point or wireless game console
adapter should do.

Thanks - found it very useful (comp.os.linux.networking). I can't find
an equivalent newsgroup for Windows (lots of different specialised ones
rather than one) so I have now subscribed.

Would anyone know if a DG834 can act as a Bridge - it is no longer
required as an ADSL router but I would want to try using it to connect a
printer with a network card. I have been told in an earlier post that
it would not work - but I live in hope
