Tempted by the broadband benefits I recently went live with Pipex - buying
the Xtreme Solo 2 go package.
I had not really thought about it at the time but I now want to create a
wireless network for the 3 PC's (one being a laptop) in the house & gain the
benefits of broadband usage on all of them.
I was supplied with a Thompson Speedtouch 330 modem which I understand I
will have to replace if I am to succeed with my wishes.
Being completely new to this I would appreciate any advice as to the best
way to proceed & which kit I should be using - together with the approximate
costs.

Steve

Having read around this subject for some months, I have just done this over
Christmas, with 2 rather than 3 PC's but the principle's the same. I
replaced the modem supplied by my ISP (Freeserve) with an ethernet modem
(D-Link DSL300G+) then bought the D-Link DI-624+ wireless router. The main
PC in the house is connected to the router via ethernet cable but the PC in
the spare room is connected via a wireless network adapter card, again a
D-Link model DWL-G520. This is a PCI Adapter so it means taking the a PC
apart and slotting it in to a free slot, but I'm a novice and I did it. You
will need a PCMCIA card for the PC to connect but this is the bit of the
jigsaw I don't have though I believe the D-Link version is the DWLG-650. I
read somewhere that there were compatibility issues between different brands
of products which is why I've gone for all the same, all bought from ebuyer
at less than £200 - the PCMCIA card will be another £40. If you go for
802.11b technology instead of 802.11g (which is quicker) it will be cheaper.

I've now got the whole lot up and running which was fairly easy to do though
I suggest you uninstall your 330 modem and delete any other dial up
connections before you start to install the ethernet modem. The main PC is
running Windows XP, the other Windows 98 SE yet I can see and open shared
files on each no problem. The internet connection on the second PC is
excellent and download times are not much inferior to the main PC and it
will play radio stations without a glitch. I'm really pleased with the
result as it's brought back into action a PC that wasn't being used.

Hope this has helped and good luck with your project!
