A friend wants wireless broadband on her PC.
It runs windows 95.
Does anybody know if the Netgear DG834GT will work on this system.
I haven't checked the PC yet but I would think it only supports USB 1.
Thanks

She really needs to get a more secure operating system than 95 if she is
going to expose her computer to the internet via broadband.

Win9x is probably as secure as XP as long as it's set up not to be running
any services, XP's security is greatly undermined by the masses of services
running, as evidenced by many security alerts about crap like the messenger
service etc. XP does have some advantages, but only if you know how to
configure it properly - but how many users are restricting themselves to
non-Admin privilege accounts for day to day work and during online use for
instance? Probably about 1%, the other 99% are at least as exposed as any
Win9x user when they go online.

Putting it behind a router will make the computer safer than it was on
dialup anyhow.

Does Netgear routers have a USB connection? I thought it was only ethernet.

A lot of kit specifies Win98SE as minimum, and people say USB on Windows
was broken before Win98SE, however in my experience the installers for USB
modems upgrade the system files for you so it may be ok, though I would
look for Win95 OSR2 as minimum, the original Win95 was not much more than
Win3.11 with a new shell and a dodgy hack for long file names.

Win9x is really only sensible via a network (wired or not) due to dodgy
USB on the hardware of that period. Not that it is only USB1, as you
aren't going to need the data rate any higher.
Many would say BB should be run on a network and not USB full stop, and
going the networking route is also a lot friendlier to old PC's.

IIRC you won't get wifi drivers for Win 95,
min req. is Win 98SE.

My experience suggests that Windows 95 is useless for any current
hardware which needs drivers, including any USB kit. And I had problems
with Windows 98 and a new DVD burner. It's a ten-year-old OS.

But if you're using DOS software for anything, you may see problems with
using it under a later Windows version.

I think your friend may have to move up to a later version of Windows.

Thanks for the replies, guess it's time for her to buy a new machine.

Or just put an ethernet card in, if she has the original Win 95 disks.
I have at least 2 Win 95 PCs among my collection and although only older
versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape (v4.7, v4.8) and Opera run for
that OS, there's nothing especially bad about using it... Of course, with
a new PC at under 350 quid (perhaps lower on Ebay) there are lots of other
options... just not many sensible ones needing USB drivers :-) Peter M.
