Because I am testing 2 Dlink DWL 900AP+ for max range I was wondering if
anyone else wants to have a bit of fun with a long range link competition.
Any hardware, any software any terrain.
This would be a good idea for seeing which access points/antennas work best.
There's no prize. (permission to feel smug sir?........Go ahead
Rimmer...)) )

We could have several categories:
Longest range unlimited power.
Longest range on 35mW with 19dBi parabolics.
Longest range on 35mW with 1x19dBi parabolic and 1 stock attenna.
Longest range on homemade attennas (pringles cans etc).
Longest range on stock attennas.

You have to get at least 1mbs transfer rate.

Ohh and no cheating.

What do you reckon?

Without a prize, it's going to be tough to get some to play. I routinely
set up 2-3 mile links, they're falling off a log easy. I'm about to get
an AP at a distant remote location (if I'm lucky). I'll be getting 3-10
mile links from that, maybe more, maybe a lot more.

A 75 mile, 1 megabit link has been done with 24db grids, 1 watt amps and off
the retail store shelf bridging radios... A simple search should turn up the
URL for it...

Glad you're having fun with it. The walkie talkies are at a much lower
frequency I'm sure, so they can penetrate better. As for long distances,
you might want to read this:
http://www.newswireless.net/articles/030120-record.html
310 km or about 192 miles. Now if I had an AP with that sort of range on
an omni antenna ...

Thats some distance record.
Bet they have a big base station parabolic.

Next step is the weather proof boxes which are now on oder from Maplin.
Then we need to build a Debian box to thottle/administer the bandwidth
between the WiFi users.

Cheers

Hi Rob.

I´m in Argentina in a small village and I´m planning to use 2 900AP+
to make a link from the village to the nearest town which is 15Km
away.
There´s nobody that I know down here who has this kind of equipment,
so I can´t test without buying them, and the problem is that our money
has been devaluated and while one dollar was equivalent to one peso in
the past the relation is now 3 to 1. So the complete setup will be
quite expensive for me.

For this reason, I´m very interested in the results you may get with
different antennae setups.
These are the antennas I was planning to use:
http://www.netnimble.net/24dbimaggrid.html

Has anybody tested them or other 24dbi grids with Dlink´s AP´s?
Is it possible to get a 15Kms range link with this setup?
1mbs transfer rate would be more than enough.

Thank you all for any information you can give me.

Nico.
