Hi,

I'm a home user who dabbles in administrating my home wireless network. The
network HAS been working perfectly for more than a year, even when a new
laptop was added into the mix 6mo ago. However, out of the blue, the laptop
stopped connecting to the network & the internet (note: it'll enable, it just
won't connect). I didn't change any settings, hardware or drivers. I didn't
mess around at all. One day it was working a-ok and then the next day it
wasn't. Annoyingly, the wired desktop still has full online access - it just
doesn't recognise that the laptop exists, just as the laptop doesn't
recognise the presence of ANY wireless networks in the area (there are
usually at least 2, plus my own). FYI: the wireless desktop is also working
perfectly... so it's not the router or network and there's clearly something
wrong with the laptop itself, right?

In terms of hardware, I'm using an MN-700 broadband router (attached to the
desktop), a wireless MN-730 card (on another desktop) and an Intel
PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network adapter (on the laptop). Supposedly the laptop's
adapter "is working properly" - plus I've uninstalled & reinstalled the
driver at least once, not to mention rolling back the system to an earlier
restore point.

Here are the "ipconfig /all" for the laptop & wired desktop:
***LAPTOP***

Any ideas why the laptop won't connect, why it won't even recognise the
PRESENCE of a network??
Please help. Thx!

My only idea is that you might be using two different pieces of software
to configure your wireless adapter. I have seen it before, as my dad
was trying to use his built in wireless adapter configured with both
Windows & the software that came with it. After we disabled one &
configured the other he has had no problems relating to not being able
to connect wirelessly.

I also answered why the "Media State" is "Media Disconnected" right
after you asked.

One last thing the MAC address of the PPP Adapter, on Windows at least
is selected at the time of the install of the driver & will give out no
personal information. One other thing as far as MAC addresses go the
first three groupings, or whatever they are called, only tell us who
made the card which you already told us, so why bother hiding it.

I'm out of ideas now. You might try posting the OS if this doesn't help.

It can't even see a wireless network to connect to that's why.

Please do not contact me directly or ask me to contact you directly for
assistance.

If your question is worth asking, it's worth posting.

If it’s not worth posting you should have done a search on
http://www.google.com/ http://www.google.com/grphp?hl=en&tab=wg&q= or
http://news.google.com/froogle?hl=en&tab=nf&ned=us&q= before wasting our
time.

If I sound hostile or arrogant you need to read the following before
posting a question "How To Ask Questions The Smart Way" at
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html (The site I've linked
to just has this article I think people should read before posting a
technical question.)

Thanks for the ideas. It wasn't a software issue b/c that laptop had been
connecting perfectly for more than 6mo prior to this 'meltdown'.
Regardless, I've now solved the problem: instead of using the WINDOWS
'network connection wizard' to make up a (theoretically) new connection to
the pre-existing network, I used the ADAPTER's software/wizard to
re-establish my link. And FYI, that software came pre-installed on my laptop
- I didn't have to use a disk or anything. I guess the hard drive can be
programed to connect but unless the adapter recognises the network, nothing's
going to happen...
Anyway, thanks for your advice.

That piece of software is what I was talking about. I was saying that
you need to control your wireless network card with that or Windows. I
also didn't know if you had another program that con configure a
wireless adapter installed on your computer. So it was an issue of you
not knowing how to deal with your network card.
