Can someone please direct me to where I can get directions on how to hook up
my brother in laws new laptop to a wireless connection. His base PC has no
wireless hookup either. Because of where he lives he is unable to receive
either DSL or Cable. His laptop came with a wireless card and he would
really like to hook up to a wireless connection. Would he need a router?
Any and all help greatly appreciated from the technology challenged.

For what purpose? Share files with the PC? Share the PC's modem?

If by chance you're under the impression his laptop's wireless
connection could enable him to receive a broadband service that way, I
have unfortunate news--it won't.

If you were to put a wireless card in teh PC, you could potentially
create an ad hoc network between the laptop and the PC. This would
enable him to share files with the PC, and possible allow the laptop
to use an internet dialup connection from teh PC using internet
connection sharing...but that's about it.

He's bedridden and needs to be able to access the internet for entertainment
purposes only. We know he's not going to get some miracle high powered
connection. All we want is for him to be able to use a dial up connection
from his laptop using a wireless connection if possible.

It should be possible. What you need is a device that'll do the "dialup
on demand" for you. If the laptop is all he has, then a router with a
dialup feature should do the job.

The SMC Barricade SMC7004AWBR should do the job. It's a 802.11b wireless
router, and from what I've seen, you can set it up to use the dialup as
the only WAN (internet) connection. It looks like you may have to log
into to the router and click a button to make it dial out, but that's a
minor inconvenience...

See the page below for more information regarding SMC routers and dialup
configurations:

Good luck.
