wireless laptop cant see my wired desktop on network

trying to network my laptop, wireless, to my desktop to work from the
kitchen. cant get the laptop to see the desktop. the desktop can see the
laptop but wont allow me access the files on it. i have done wired networks
before but i cant figure this out.
