Wireless LAN - questions from newbie

Hi

Newbie with two stupid questions - I've got a setup which works fine
except the machines can't see each other.
Am I right in thinking this should be possible? if so, how? These are
D-Link components (614+, 650+ etc) and the setup is default plus 64 bit
crypto. Machines are running Win98 and ME.

A second question: if I remove the PCMCIA from the laptop for transport,
then restart the laptop and reinsert the card, it "forgets" the crypto
string. Any way to stop this happening?

Thanks
T.

Apologies if these are FAQs, I couldn't find an answer in Google, except
that it looks like it should be possible to ping between the machines.

Sorry I don't know about the crypto question, but the following site's
walk-through

http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net.asp

helped me get my home network up and running.

good luck,

ian

It should work. I just plugged a d-link card into a new laptop and fired it
up. When I go to "Network Places", I see the other machines and can browse
their files, use their printers, etc. There was nothing special I needed to
do to get it set up.

Are you auto discovering DNS and IP?

secone question first: run the dlink utilities it has function there to save
key etc etc, if you run it and only default windows utilities came up, look
in the network connnection properties and untick where it say let windows
manage your wireless connection or something similar.

as for pc not seeing each other: assuming that wireless connection ok, goes
thro the process of setting up a LAN as per normal wired LAN try share a
drive or folder.

Thanks for the replies guys. I don't know what I was doing wrong, but I
couldn't even ping. Works now.

Sorry but you've lost me.. what utilities? I looked on all the CDs,
nothing, do you mean the URL on the router, or the popup on the Airplus
icon? That's where I set the crypto key, but I don't find anything with
settings like you describe.
Please explain.

I had the same issue with a D-Link card and AP...couldn't even ping
and then magically later it seemed to work. Very odd.

yeah the airplus icon on the client, not the router.. when double click that
do you get D-Link utilities or windows default wireless setup. If windows
wireless setup there a tick on "wireless network" tab, untick the "use
windows to configure my wireless network settings" after untick that aplly
setting then double click airplus utilites again

ok..

well yes, it was the D-Link panel all the time and no, I didn't change
anything and, you won't believe this, but it works correctly now, I can
hot plug without losing the crypto.

Thanks anyway, any best wishes for the New Year.
