WIRELESS LAN WITH DESKTOP AND LAPTOP

Hello!
My name is Slash and I'm newbie with wireless technologies.
I own a desktop that is connected to Internet using a ADSL Speedtouch
USModem. I also own a Asus Laptop. I usually have this laptop
connected to my Lan, using a 5 port 10/100Mbps switch (RJ45). I also
share the desktop ADSL connection with my lapto using Internet
Connection Sharing (Both computers have XP Pro).
I'm thinking about installing a wireless Lan, but I want to keep my
topology, at least.
My question is:
Is it enough to buy a PCI wireless card and a PCMCIA wireless card,
like D-Link DWL-G520 and DWL-G650?
My idea is to keep the ADSL entering on the desktop over USB ADSL
Modem and put wireless only between both computers. Since laptop
reaches the internet over the desktoop, laptop uses wireless to go to
internet, besides using wireless to connect directly to desktop (share
files, for instance).
Is it enough?
My doubt is: do I need a wireless router? I don't intend to have any
more computers and my desktop is ALWAYS on and 24/7 on the internet,
so I don't have problems to turn on desktop to navigate on the
internet on the laptop.
Will I have problems with IP's assignment on laptop, since I wont have
a router that will "hide" my laptop Ip with desktop as "default
gateway"?
Perhaps my thoughts are meaningless, because I've used the same kind
of connection, but despite of wireless was wired, with cat5 UTP
straight cable.
Since I don't know if I can use ICS with wireless technology, I have
to ask you this.
Thanks for your help,

Andrea

Yes, that should work, provided you don't mind the internet-connected
computer being always on for the other one to work. Also, the main
computer will have a little extra work to do, so if you are using it
for something heavy like video editing, its performance might suffer a
bit. Provided you accept these limitations, and the fact that if your
main computer crashes you will lose the use of the internet to both,
then you shoud be able to use Internet Connection Sharing. An ethernet
router and wireles access point would be a more elegant solution, more
easily expandable in the future, and probably not much more expensive,
but it's up to you.

Rod.

While you could use ICS, you're better off with one of those cheap
wireless/router/firewall boxes.

Hello!
What do you mean? What do you advise? With a router or without it?
It's about $200, too expensive for me right now.

What I said is that while either method will work, there are many reasons
why it's better to have one of those wireless router boxes. Also, where
did you find one that's so expensive? A few months ago, I bought an SMC
7004VWBR wireless router for $20 (CDN) after rebates.

$20 Cdn! You beat me. Mine cost C$30 after rebates and I thought that was
great. However, look now and Future Shop has it at C$80

Hello!
I'm portuguese and I live in Portugal. So, I think it's diferent from
US people.
What I mean is the D-Link DI-624 Router and I also need a ADSL model,
because mine is USB. Perhaps the D-Link DSL-302G. The router is about
150€ and the modem 60€.
Best regards,
Andrea

Hello!
I just want to say that I bought my PCMCIA and my PCI today.
I bought D-Link DWL-G520+ and DWL-G650+.
It works pretty great. Of course, when I'll have the money I'll buy a
wireless router and modem ADSL to improve my LAN.
But so far so good.
An advise, I just installed DLink utility and it came crap. Just
unistalled it and selected the Windows automatically detection and
configuration, to leave Win XP Pro to do its job. The DLink utillity
becomes pretty confusing to deal with and XP does a great job indeed.
Hope this helps anyone.
Best regards.
Andrea

<DELETED ORIGINAL POST FOR SPACE>

Andrea,

Right now you can purchase a U.S. Robotics 802.11g Turbo Router from
TigerDirect for $80. Then USR has a sweet rebate deal of $40, so after
rebate you're only paying $40 for a very nice router that allows you to do
some pretty tight security stuff (e.g., firewall, disable SSID broadcast,
WEP encryption, etc.). I bought a D-Link Modem at the same time for $40
with a $20 rebate. So I'm getting the whole "kit and cabootle" for $60
after rebates, not bad huh!!!

The easiest setup is MODEM ----> W/L ROUTER ----> PC (----> is your
twisted pair cable)

This way even if your PC/Server crashes, you'll still have 11 Mbps (give or
take a meg or 2) of bandwidth connectivity to the Internet.

Just my opine (.02 worth).

Marty
