I have heard conflicting reports on this so would like to know what you guys
think - if I buy a wireless adsl router and pci cards, is it likely to
conflict with my cordless phones?

Thanks for your advice

Daniel

Depends on the cordless phones. If they are 2.4ghz, there is a good chance
they will interfer. I have a cheap phone that blocks channel 1, so I use
channel 11. The 2.4ghz band is shared by a lot of devices, not just WiFi.
Something to look out for.

So I should be looking for something that enables you to change what channel
it is operating on?

Thanks for your reply

It depends a lot on your cordless phone. I use vtech 2.GHz DSS phones and
have no problems whatsoever.

You might (or might not) regret it if you buy PCI cards. Their antenna
tends to be, at least partially, blocked by the computer's case. That can
reduce your signal strength. Connecting an external antenna to a PCI card
introduces losses that can also hinder performance.

You might want to consider using an external client device that connects to
the computer via USB or Ethernet. These can be placed wherever it is
necessary to get the best signal strength. Also, you can use a reflector if
you need to further strengthen your signal. That's more difficult to do
with a PCI card.

Some people report problems with cordless phones and WiFi. Particularly
2.4 ghz phones. If you are purchasing cordless phones, better to go with
the 900 mhz models.

I had a 2.4 ghz phone system and WiFi at home. No problems whatsoever.
When my phone base station died, I changed to 900 mhz anyhow.

You should be looking for cordless phones that DON'T use 2.4ghz. The
channels I had to change were for the WiFi network. Same for other wireless
devices such as cameras, baby monitors, etc.. Get them for another band
like 900mhz.

To add to that, get a digital 900mhz model, if you can find it. Seems
the vendors have switch to the really cheap analog 900mhz phones and
they are pretty much crap.

2.4 Ghz phones can be a problem for 802.11 networks. As others have
suggested, I'd go for a 900Mhz phone. There are also 5Ghz phones, but they
are more expensive. Also, if you ever plan on going to 802.11a, I'm not sure
that you won't see interference again.

I got a Uniden DSS 5.8GHz phone just to avoid this problem.

Just make sure you get a true 5.8GHz phone. A lot of the ones I
looked at, were actually 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz hybrids, but you needed to
dig rather deeply into their specs to find that they used 2.4GHz too.

The Uniden DSS 5.8GHz cordless phones are true 5.8GHz phones. Matter of
fact, they were only ones I found back then I was comparison shopping.

IMHO, 802.11a is a dead end. So, it is unlikely that a 5.8GHz phone
will conflict with any popular wireless lan you might choose.

The other alternative is to wait for the wireless lan based cordless phones.
Hopefully, for example, a WiFi based cordless phone will successfully
cooperate with a WiFi based wireless lan in the same house.

We have PhillipsOtis 2.4GHz cordless phones (3 of them dotted around
the house) and I have never seen any intereference from them.
