Wireless issues and SP2

Hi,
I recently downloaded SP 2 for my IBM laptop. I have since had major
issues connecting to wireless services. I have wireless at home and at
school and my computer recognizes the signals and says there is a "very good
/ excellent" signal, however when I connect I just get a blank screen. Any
ideas on how to troubleshoot this? I've disabled and re-enabled the wireless
multiple times, I"ve tried turning the firewall on and off and frankly I'm
not sure what else to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

I spent considerable time on researching on the post service pack 2
installation problems. I had a similar problem. Post service pack 2
installation on windows XP(home edition) I use to get signal strength is
maximum (very good), but used to get Limited or no network connectivity. I
researched on Google and come up with the following article, that explains
about a bug in Service Pack 2.

Please check the following article. It helped me to solve the problem. I am
glad to share it with others who will not waste time in microsoft product
bugs.

Not too many details to help you... what is this blank screen - Internet explorer?
Do you see the "limited connectivity" message?
If you know IP address of your AP/router, can you ping it?

Ok I've just read this page and haven't see too much of "bug on SP2" there.
The first part of this article repeats well known advices how to fix
common networking issues with XP in general and SP2 (the new firewall etc).

Next, there is a reference to one bug: KB884020 that can affect some software
that install as a local proxy - but actually, IMHO, can break trojans and
spyware that often do so too.
Next one is the VPN ove NAT issue that isn't likely to affect home users -
most probably not relevant for the OP.

So, can you remember which advice on that link helped you?
If it was from the first part - it can't be qualified as "SP2 bug".

I read your web site and found the following problems with it.
1- The site talks about bugs but never REALLY mentions a bug at all.

2- Cabling, TP and UTP. TP or twisted pair- I think the site confuses this
with a cross over cable because UTP is unshielded twisted pair. The standard
for cat5 cables uses several twisted pairs. The twisting within the cable
reduces crosstalk between the other twisted pairs within the cable.

3- The site says Zonealarm(free) is the "most common problematic firewall
program". This statement is simply misinformation and not even close to the
truth. I have found Zonealarm to be the best firewall product to use, not
just blocking incoming packets but also OUTGOING packets such as spyware and
trojans. You just have to know how to add your subnet or range of IPs to the
trusted zone. Apparently the writer of the site doesn't know how to
configure a firewall.

I haven't found ANY bugs with SP2 yet, but again you have to configure a few
things. These are not bug issues but configuration issues.
First, turn OFF the windows firewall(ON by default after applying SP2).
Second, UNCHECK the enable IEEE 802.1x authentication box(CHECKED by default
after applying SP2).
Third, update you drivers and or firmware for your wireless card. Best to
download the latest drivers BEFORE applying SP2, then if the card doesn't
work AFTER SP2 you can simply reinstall the drivers.

Not a lot to work with there....

Is your router set up to assign IP addresses using DCHP? If so, what
IP address is assigned to your connection.... is it one from the range
that should be allocated by your DCHP? Or is a completely barmy one
which has nothing to do with anything.

If the latter, which it seems like to me, then it sounds like a
security issue. Are you using encryption? If so, what type? Try
turning off encryption (only temporarily) and do you now get a "live"
connection? If so then you are probably not authenticating properly.

Generally speaking wireless networks will allow you to "connect" even
if you fail to authenticate properly. However you will quickly find
the connection is totally useless but Windows does (misleadingly)
report you are connected.

Hi,
I think what you should try is to make sure you dont have another third
party firewall enabled like norton internet security or another firewwall
like sygate personal firewall or zonealarm

Also try to uninstall and reinstall your wireless card - via your install
disk - another thing you should try is netsh winsock reset and netsh int ip
reset

check for functionality after you do this..

Also another ide aoyu can try is to open windows explorer and try to type in
a web page to see if it is just an issue with ie.

Have you tried any of the things I suggested? If so, what were the

this message means that your pc does not get an IP address
from the school or at home DHCP server.

what is confusing is additionnally that MS generates a
169.254.x.x. value, which is an ICS bug I think.
This should be a 0.0.0.0 or so.

Why no connection?
The strong signal / green lights means it works at layer 1
= well transmitting and receiving but not more than that.
It's like receiving letters, envelopes, blank on the
outside. so who is to open them?

It is like listening to a nice speech in chinese.
Loud and clear, but no idea what they say.

There is a REPAIR option on the right hand mouse button
you can try it, often it does not work.
It tries to renew the connection IP address route.
Restart Windows helped for me.

A second reason;
you have not entered an key, in this case it is simply an
entrance problem. In this case repeat several times
disconnect/connect on the menu "Make a new connection".
that worked here.

Never forget: this is Microsoftware, the options do not mean
what you think they mean. Sometimes do the illogical will
help :-)

It has nothing to do with firewall issues.
