Wireless internet installation?

I am trying to set up a wireless network for my friend. She has cable
internet on a desktop PC running windows XP and would like to share that
with her dell notebook also running XP. She has a Netgear MA111 USB adapter
and a wireless card for her laptop. I was under the impression that she
still needed a wireless router, but the man at best buy who sold her the
MA111 told her that was all she needed.
I, for the life of me, cannot figure out what needs to be done in order to
get the internet onto the laptop.
Does anyone know if this is enough hardware to share the internet
connection?
And is there guide that could direct me in the proper steps to take to set
up this wireless network? I have been unable to locate any online
installation guides through google, because the majority of the hits are
online retailers selling the product, not telling how to use it.

thanks

d,

You can do it without a WRouter. If you have two client cards and no access
point/router you need to use what's called "ad-hoc" mode. look this up in
whatever manuals you have for the WLAN cards or on the makers web sites. You
probably need to enable ICS (Microsoft Internet Connection sharing) on the
PC as well.

I agree, however it is sometimes known as 'peer-to-peer'.

One thing though, some systems do not let you use the same internet
connewction on a peer-to-peer network, only file sharing.

Hope this helps,

Mike.

Mike - huh?. Peer-to-peer means, in M$ terms, using a workgroup
instead of a domain, and ICS works fine with a workgroup. The PC
with the cable connection must be the ICS server, and the laptop
will be the ICS client, and the client-server connection will run
over an ad-hoc wireless link.

Hi Bob,

agreed, however just making the point that some wireless systems call it
peer-to-peer and not the usual ad-hoc.

Thanks,

Mike.
