Wireless Internet @ Home

I have a ADSL connection at home and just have one computer - a laptop.

I want to be able to connect to the internet anywhere in the house (garden
when the summer comes). What pieces of kit do I need to enable me to surf
the net from anywhere?

Am I right in thinking I can get away with two bits of kit? Wireless router
and a wireless PC card? Can someone suggest some bits of kit and links to
them?

TIA,

Smurf

Does your ADSL modem have an Ethernet out port? You will need this to
connect to the wireless router.
Or get a combined wireless modem router?

Smurf,

I use BT Voyager 2000 Wireless Router Modem, and adapters for 2 PC's and a
laptop. Go to http://www.shop.bt.com/invt/006743
and check out details and price. Very easy to set up and so far since
November, when I bought it , has been reliable.

Gary,

It hasn't got an ethernet out port, it's only a frog from BTOpenworld. I
was thinking of getting a combined router/modem so it can just plug straight
into the ADSL line. Would I be right in thinking that I can get one of
these and then just plug a wireless lan card into my laptop? How easy are
these things to set up? Is there a particular type of card I need to ensure
that I get the full effects of my broadband connection over the wireless
coneection?

TIA,

Smurf

Tom,

Do you notice any difference in internet speed? Do you get the full effect
of broadband over this connection? I've read that there are two types of
specification for wireless, 802.11b and 802.11g. Thanks for your help so
far.

Cheers,

Smurf

Broadband runs at half a meg, a meg or 2 meg. Even the slowest
wireless is badged 11 meg, but effective speed is around half - say 5
meg. It will not be slowed at all by going over wireless.

Given the way wireless is evolving, buy the cheapest now (11b) and
upgrade in a year or so when they sort all the security out. You will
spend the same in total as buying 11g kit now, but you will have
better kit.

Thanks for your advice. Now just one more question as a complete network
novice?

I have my newly purchased combined modem/router pluged into the ADSL line.
I have my newly purchased wireless network card plugged into my laptop. Do
I connect to the internet via the same way as I do now, through the dialer I
have set up? Just specifying the wireless network as the device to "connect
using".

I think after the answer to this I'll be searching for my kit!

Thanks for everybody's help and any future replies.

No. You are now using a network connection to the router not a modem
connection. (even though it is a combined router/modem - think of it
as two seperate bits of kit that happen to live inside the same box).

Use a cable connection to the modem/router to set it all up and only
once you have this working switch to wireless.

Your modem/router will come with the instructions and drivers you
need. DLink are very easy to set up in my experience.

Whatever you do. don't take any advice from the likes of PC World droids.
Follow what people tell you on here and then buy some kit from ebuyer or
similar or ask where to get it from on here.
