When will wireless internet become a reality?

I am new to cell phones, but old to the internet. How far in the
future will I be able to use the same device for cell phone and web
surfing? I realize there are tools out there, but their functionality
is limited and price is very expensive.

When will their price come down and functionality improve to the point
where it's more economical to own them compared to owning a cell phone
and home hi-speed internet line?

I always dreamed of having a portable computer that had the answer to
every question. I believe that device is "Google".

I saw 5 - 8 years before a cell phone is able to replace a home DSL
connection.
