Anyone willing to share their experience please. I am currently with a
Netgear MR814v1 and so far so good with a 11b USB card. Wanted to get
another card for my laptop but willing to go for a G-card instead of a
B-card again.

G is generally backwards compatible with B. If you need to transfer large
files across your wireless network, you should certainly consider G cards.
Your B is limited to 11 megabit. G is 54 megabit (just about 5 times
faster). Also, keep in mind that in most situations, if there is a B client
attached to a G Access Point, all other clients will be limited to B speeds.
So, if you use that USB B device on another computer at the same time as a
new G card for your laptop, you'll probably still be limited to B speeds,
but if the laptop is your only wireless device, it will operate at the full
G speeds.

if the G card is wifi certified this demonstrates backward
compatibility with B and that it has passed interoperability tests

The MR814 is listed as a B router. You will never get better than B speeds
(11Mbps nominal, 4 - 6Mpbs actual) with this router. To go to G, you also
need to replace the router.

Also, the G standard does not include B. A NIC that says just G supports
only G, not both G and B. Many NICs these days that support G are dual-mode,
and will say on the box that they support both B and G. Likewise for the
router. If you want to upgrade, I suggest you go for dual B/G. That way you
can use the laptop at a hotspot that uses B.

I've actually been looking for some G only gear. Do you have any examples
of cards and APs that are G only? Thanks.

Hard to find, actually. Most products that say "G" in the ads are actually
B/G.

Looks like the D-Link DWL-G120 is G-only. It's USB-connected, so might not
be what you're looking for.

Why go for G only? B/G doesn't cost more, and almost all vendors are
bundling them together in dual-mode devices. If you don't want a router to
support B, you can usually disable B. And you might appreciate the
flexibility in your client card.

Most G cards are downward compatible. As long as your Access point is true
802.11b compliant, then you should be okay with a G notebook card.
