Apologies if this is something of a FAQ, and I know it's a bit OT too,
but to sure where else to ask....

I have a Pipex ADSL connection via a Draytek router in my attic, and
have CAT5 run to the ground floor of the house to use a laptop in the
front room. Can I just buy a Wireless Access Point and plug the CAT5
downstairs into it? Or do I need to replace the cable with a crossover
cable?

Any recommendations on WAPs?

TIA

You could connect the AP to the end of the CAT5 and use wireless to access
the Internet from the laptop. You don't need a cross-over cable. Why not
try putting the access point in the attic with the router?

I've got a Netgear WAP11 which is 802.11b only - I tend to get about 5Mbps
throughput on it with a Belkin wireless card on a laptop.

That's the main reason for doing it, so I'm not restricted to one location
downstairs (or some horrible cabling mess)

Excellent!

Dont really need to use it up there - figure I'll get better coverage from a
high position on the ground floor.
