To be honest, eighty feet is pretty good going in my experience.
Indoors I get no signal at the front of my house, from my AP mounted
on the rear wall - thats about 50 feet through four brick walls. I get
about eighty feet outdoors - I can _just_ get a signal sitting at the
end of my garden. I'm afraid that the advertised range is best-case
line-of-sight perfect weather conditions, with all the aerials aligned
just right, and a following wind caused by lots of salesmen spotting a
mark.....
Important factors would be the design of your antenna in the PC
(external? Internal? can you change its orientation?), and the design
of the one in the AP (same stuff), the orientation of both (some
antennae are quite directional, try moving the AP around, standing it
on its end etc). If its an option you could fit an external antenna on
the AP, aimed at where you most need signal.
