wireless doesn't get dns, wired does

I am trying to set up a second laptop's wireless with SuSE 9.1. I
already have one laptop (IBM) working perfectly. I believe I've set up
everything identically to the working laptop, but I still can't get to
the Internet with the new laptop's wireless. Here are the details:

Cable Internet to wired Linksys router with Linksys WAP. I've set the
WAP to accept the MAC address of the new laptop.
New laptop is Compaq Presario X1000 w/Intel PRO 2100
SuSE 9.1 with all current updates, no firewall, no WEP (for now).

The Compaq's wireless card is seen by SuSE, drivers are loaded, and it
gets an IP address from the router. Connection is very strong. If I
keep the ethernet plugged in on startup, I get an IP address for eth0
and a second one for eth1 (wireless). I can get to the Internet
perfectly with ethernet. If I restart with no ethernet, I get the
192.168.1.xxx IP address for the wireless card and can ping the router
and the WAP, but no Internet.

The settings for hostname, gateway, dns (get via dhcp, but I've also
manually entered in the same settings that work on the IBM and also the
desktop machine) all look identical to me in all machines.

I'm sorry, but I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with the dns
for the wireless part. Aside from the different hardware of course, it
looks to me like all the settings are identical on both laptops. I'd
appreciate it if someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks so much,

Malke

Hello Malke,

take a look at the routing table.
hostname:/home/username # route
Kernel IP Routentabelle
Ziel Router Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use
Iface
default access1-dsl-d.n 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 ppp0
Your default route must point to the wireless interface (eth1 as you said).
To make it work with both interfaces, take use of the metrics. Regards,
Alex

Thank you, Alex. Where would I find the configuration file to change the
metrics? Using YaST in the Network Devices, I can go to the "Expert"
settings and add details to the general Default Route (which I have set
to the router at 192.168.1.1) but there isn't any place to edit the
flags, etc. I looked at wlan.conf in /etc/wlan but that doesn't seem
right, either.

I really appreciate your help and thank you again.

I want to thank you again, Alex. The problem turned out to be that
getting dns via dhcp didn't work on the Intel Pro 2100 (latest
firmware) in the Compaq while it does work on my IBM built-in a/b/g in
the Thinkpad. I set dns manually and - voila! - Internet. >sigh<

Thanks again. Even thought I solved my problem otherwise, I welcome the
knowledge you gave.

Very much cheers,

Malke
