Mystery situation. Never used WinMe before.

1. Installed Netgear MA311 wireless network card out of the box onto IBM
NetVista with OEM WinME on it, all worked fine, could see other two home
PCs, broadband fine with IE 5.5 and OE 5.

2. This 2000 vintage machine had never been on the internet before, so I
ran Windows Update and installed all critical updates except IE6 and maybe
one other, can't remember.

3. Doing the restart, WinMe crashes with an Unexpected error / white
screen / turn off your active desktop question, and no Windows explorer
component will work, although apps seem OK. System soon hangs. No ref to
browseui.dll (another known bug). Scanreg /fix doesn't work. System restore
doesn't work. Safe mode works. Taking the Netgear card out fixes the
problem, so that's pretty central. But WHY did it work OK out of the box
and then fail after windows update?

Can't see a way forward. IBM "product recovery" (reformat) beckons. Help!
