wireless connection problem?

Hello,

I have just replaced an ADSL router/modem for a friend - using a
Belkin F5D7633 uk4A.

A PC with a wired connection to the router and one laptop connect fine
with the router and the Internet - the other laptop does not.

Its OS is XP/Media Centre. Although I can ping a web site on the
Internet from this laptop, I cannot get to this site using Internet
Explorer (v6). Do not even get an error message.

The icon shows that the wireless connection is present.

I have tried stopping both the Windows XP firewall and the another one
which is on the PC but neither allows IE to work.

Any suggestions please?!

Cheers

Geoff

.... so "ping" can get to the internet but Internet Explorer can't...
Try this:
From Internet Explorer:
Tools -> Internet Options --> "Connections" Tab ->
"LAN Settings" button --> Make sure nothing is checked.

HTH,
John

Hi!I'm far away from a "computer specialist",but I think I can help
you, because not so long ago we had the same problem at home.Check which one
of the existing connections in the host computer is shared. The shared
connection should be the dialer, that connects you to the internet. When you
share the right connection,in it's settings mark the name of the home
wireless connection. That's it or at least this helped me at home.I wasn't
sharing the right connection :-(((

Maria,

I am not sharing connections as far as I know! There is an ADSL
modem/router which has 1 desktop PC hard wired to it and that PC can
access the Internet.

There is a laptop which connects OK to the Internet via the ADSL
modem/router via a wireless connection.

It is the second laptop which fails to connect via wireless to the
Internet when using Internet Explorer - even though I can ping an
outside web site.

Cheers,

Geoff

Jack - many thanks for the link - some really useful info.

By the way you have made me realize that I wrongly described the
friend's situation - the PC which will not connect by wireless is a
new Dell desktop not a laptop.

On this machine I can ping web sites on the Internet but not see them
in the browser. Plus the browser (IE v6) doesn't even come up with an
error message.

Cheers

Geoff
