Wireless Connection disconnects wired connection: mn-500

When I attempt to make a wireless connection to my mn-500 base station,
it seems to disable my wired connection. Is this the correct behavior?
I'm using a Compaq laptop with a built in adapter (802.11 b/g).

Also, my wireless connection does not appear to function. After it
tells me that I connected successfully, my internet does not work.
I'll browse the wireless connections and my ssid is listed as "not
connected". However, when I select my SSID, it asks if I want to
disconnect. In other words, its telling me that simultaneously
connected and not connected. Has anyone encountered this before?
