Hi Guys

I'm new at this and want some advice.

A friend has a US Robotics Sure Connect router which is provided by his
company for his home office his work laptop is locked down and he cannot
install any software or the like on to it.

Is it possible to run a wireless access point off of it so that he can
access it from his own personal laptop bearing in mind that the wap will not
be hard wired to a pc.

All he wants to do is connect to the broadband connection as if it were a
hot spot are there any wap's available that can offer this and if so can you
let me know which one they are as I will be the lucky one trying to set it
up.

Thanks in advance.

Eddie

With the router, he can likely plug in a wireless AP no problem there.
The problem is with the laptop, if it's a NT based O/S and he doesn't
have Admin rights to install software on the machine. There must be a
driver installed on the machine for the wireless card to work. If the
laptop is locked down as you indicate, that's where the problem is going
to be.

Hi Duane

My mate has got two laptops the work one and his own personal one they are
both running XP we cant touch the work laptop that is alrady using the
router we just want to share the broadband connection

What I want to do is connect a wireless access point to the second etehrnet
connection on the router and then connect the second personal laptop to the
internet through it. We already know all the passwords and all that malarky
needed to access the router but what I need to know is can you set up a
wireless network by :-

Having the second (Home) laptop connect to the wap and then setup the wap
via the wireless connection or does it have to be done through a wired
connection and then if so could you setup the wap and then unplug and leave
it unplugged.

Hope I havent confused matters more.

Cheers

Eddie

I cannot say for sure, since I only have used a WAP/wired router. But I
think you will be able to access the WAP's Admin pages through a browser
like IE by entering the WAP's Device IP like http://192.168.1.1 that I
must eneter to get to the router's Admin pages. And that can be done
through a wired or wireless computer that has access to the router.

So I would say that you can access the WAP from a wired machine with the
wired machine and WAP plugged into the router and configure the WAP. Then
you should be able to access the WAP's Admin pages from the wireless
machine too, once you use the wired machine to configure the WAP so that
the wireless machine can access it.

Since the router is a gateway device and the WAP is plugged into it, you
should be able to access it from a wired or wireless computer.

Don't hold me to it, but I think that's how it's going to play out for
you.

Duane

Kit??? Really don't what you mean.

Anyway I have a firewall/router already setup (linux debian woody),
and needed a wireless access point. I purchased a wireless syslink
router (which was a mistake should have purchased an access point). I
used a direct connection to the router and setup the router using
http://192.168.1.1, and disabled the services I did not need e.g.
DHCP. Then I changed the fixed ip address on the wireless router to
work with my local private network. This is an important step. Plugged
the wireless router in the the ethernet hub and the rest was history.

At first it did not work because I was trying to use the WAN port
which is supposed to connect to the internet. The reason the WAN port
did not work for me because I was not able to turn off NAT on the WAN
port and the effect was doing NAT twice which won't work. I just
plugged the wireless router directly into my hub from a regular port
on the wireless router. It worked like a charm.

As a bonus the wired ports or the wireless router also work just fine
with this setup.

I think this is easier to do with an access point, since you already
have a wired router. This the same situation that I had. I gave the
wireless router to my dad and will try a wireless access point next
week.

This sounds like what you want to do. Give us an update on what you
decided to do and the results. However, what you want is doable just
do it ;-). I did this in Linux using only the web browser interface so
you should be able to setup system in Windows, and I did not change
any other settings. All that is needed is a web browser.

Hope this helps.

Alan

Okay - Linksys BEFW11S4 version 4, and an old Dell Wireless card - I
think it is an orinoco gold card.

Good luck
