OK everyone and anyone...who feels stupid? Except that I feel rather
mystified.
I deleted the Network Bridge; reran the Network Wizard to re-establish the
LAN (between the PCs) with only the 3Com adapter selected as the link, and
with the internet on a gateway. And even without booting, all of a sudden
the 3Com network card gained its IPa ddress from the router, and all was,
and still is, very well indeed.
So why didin't it work with the network bridge? surely one can connect a
bridge to a router - well I know you can...but hey anyway one of lifes, or
rather XP's, little surprises.
