I was redirected to this forum. My son runs XP on a laptop. Recently it
stopped accessing the internet. He advises it was after an update failed to
properly install, but he cannot tell me which one. The computer reports a
wireless connection and all of our other computers easly access the internet
from the router. Any browser, however, cannot see the connection. Ideas?

Brian
Can you access the router webpage from that laptop?
Open the IE browser and type in the Address bar 192.168.1.1 click [OK] or
Hit Enter and run the wizard for the wireless.
Does it connect to the internet if wired to the Router?

Nass: Yes, I am able to access the router from the affected laptop. I have
it pulled up at the moment. There appears to be o issue with communication
from the computer to the router, and now it appears that IE7 also can
communicate with the router. Still no communication with the internet. (I
made sure that work offline is not selected).

Nass: Thanks for the follow up and patience. I do not know how to send you
such information or precisely how to caputer the output. I typed ipconfig \
all at a command prompt on both machines, however, and the material generated
was identical. I am not certain if this helps.

Brian, do this:
Start-> run -> cmd <enter>
Then type
ipconfig /all > C:\ip.txt <enter>
exit <enter>

Now open the C:\ip.txt file and copy and paste the text into a reply.
Of course do this on the PC Nass wanted you to do it on. Thanks.

I'm not sure if you are aware of these DNS provider or they just there!
ads.rnib.org.uk
= > tiscali.co.uk
= > rnib.org.uk

If your provider Tiscali.co.uk and they given you the DNS then I can
understand that but what the rest doing there.
If Tiscali is assigning an Auto IP and DNS then there is no need for the
above to be there, so remove them from the DNS entry and make sure the
Machine is getting an Automatic IP address by reading this Article and also
make sure the Riuter is dishing out anAuto IPs for the machine(s).

Hi - thanks for replying.

Tiscali is my ISP. The other DNS entries are to do with my employer - it's a
work laptop and needs to be able to plug into the office network by wire.
Also has 3G card. However, we're talking about the laptop which does connect
happily to my home wireless network which is housed on my first desktop PC.

The problem is my second desktop PC, that's the short ipconfig/all entry
pasted in my previous post. It can see the network, and with 192.168.1.1 I
can see the router settings. However when I open IE6 it says it cannot
connect to the internet. Have tried the XP network diagnostic which just says
speak to your ISP and / or router provider. Any advice on settings on the
second desktop PC?

Thanks

Should also have added that the 'problem' PC could see the network but not
connect to until I specified a static IP address (192.168.1.100) on it and
the router. With that IP address it connected but as I say IE6 isn't working.
