I'm using Debian Sid, Kernel 2.6.22-1-686

What are the files I need to edit to have my wireless adapter be initialized
and boot up during the system initialization? I am talking about the system
files BEFORE I ever get to a login prompt.

I know how to set up a network using iwconfig, ifup, etc....
I am asking "is there a file that I need to add network info to (other
than /etc/network/interfaces) in order for my system to access the
netwoek/internet automatically before I have to login?

It may be distribution dependent,
but under Fedora the most important files are
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-<dev>
eg ifcfg-eth0 .

Debian Lenny, also kernel 2.6.22 .

Shouldn't need to edit any other files. Network interfaces are configured
in /etc/network/interfaces, those which are marked auto are brought up by
the initscript /etc/init.d/networking at boot-time. Have a look
at /usr/share/doc/netbase/README.Debian.

Defaults for networking to start before the runlevel scripts are processed,
so you can use the interfaces in any /etc/rc.local before you login. FYI
it's /etc/rcS.d/S40networking.
