wireless card firmware source code?

Does anyone know of a wireless card manufacturer (pref 802.11b) that
supplies source code for the firmware running on the card? Maybe as a
reference design kit? I would like to experiment with some improvements at
the physical layer (QOS, Encryption, etc.) and I need access to the raw bits
being transferred over the link.

Also, is there a more technical newsgroup for wifi issues?
