I have installed a wireless router, configured fine. Went
on to install wireless card on laptop and this linksys
wpc11 is giving me problems. After installing the card
windows boots up and i get an error "10038". I have tried
to remove and then add a new tcp/ip device but still no
luck.
I'm running windows 98 SE.. any help would be great since
i really don't want to return this new item. thank you.

Check your computer for adware, spyware or other unwanted guests. Download
a copy of AdAware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/, install it, run it and
load the latest updates, then scan your system and clean off everything it
finds. Then restart and run it again, keep running and cleaning and
restarting until the system is clean. Stubborn pests that aren't cleaned
after two or three passes might need to be cleaned from Safe Mode.

I did try that..no luck still. I'm wondering if this a
hardware issue. As far as i can tell it looks like a
hardware config issue.

It's possible, but I don't think so. The exact meaning of the error 10038
is "Attempted a socket operation on a non-socket resource". This is usually
caused by spyware getting confused when you swap out network connections.
It could also be caused by a corrupt TCP/IP stack. You may want to try this
next:

Been there, done that. I have this card (Linksys WPC11 v.4).
Couldn't make it work under Win98. Tried several sugestions
that I found in these newsgroups: clean up spyware, new drivers,
you name it. Nothing worked. So I decided to do a fresh install
of Windows 98 SE (Second Edition). Then the first thing I installed
after Win 98SE finished its installation was the card drive and
software (which came in the CD with the card).
It worked!
My 2 cents...
Good luck.

The V4 version of this card uses a completely different chipset than the V3
and earlier. Probably got winders all confused. Once winders decides how
it thinks hardware should be set up it's very reluctant to change.
