Wireless broadband question...

Hi there,

Sorry if this is slightly off-topic for this group.

My current home computer setup is basically a windows laptop with a
bluetooth adapter and a bluetooth modem connected to my phone line.

i.e. a box on the wall, connected to the phone and I can use the laptop
anywhere in the house to connect to the internet.

I want to go broadband and have a similar setup, i.e a box on the wall
and some sort of wireless connection to my laptop.

But everything I've found on the net seems to suggest I need a computer
wired to the ADSL connection and then run a wireless network from
there. But that seems a bit overkill for what I want.

Can the simple system be done? If so, how? And using what kit?

Any info appreciated,

Cheers,

Ric.

A wireless ADSL router (such as the Netgear DG834G) would do the job.
You connect this to your phone line, then any PC with a compatible
wireless card (eg. Netgear WG511) can connect to the router whenever.

This and many other makes available at www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk

I agree the wireless router is the way to go(gives you room for future
expansion.I won't recommend one as people have different views on
them, however make sure it can at least run WPA encryption or better.
Wireless networking eqpt can be found here http://tinyurl.com/5uup9
(e-buyer).
I think the reason you have come across "Pc wired to ADSL Modem" is
that many people have had problems setting up the Modem initially and
found it easier to use a cable connection ,the same applies to firmware
updates for the router as these were probably downloaded to the laptop
initially and corruption in data occurred when trying to upgrade the router.
Whatever you do make sure you read up on making your wireless network
secure otherwise someone else may decide to use it for access.
